Leather Chesterfield sofas, made to order
A Chesterfield is defined by three things: deep button tufting across the back, rolled arms at the same height as that back, and a low, grounded stance. The shape dates to the eighteenth century and has stayed in production continuously ever since, which is why it reads as neither traditional nor contemporary — it simply predates the distinction.
Every piece here is hand-tufted to order in top-grain buffalo hide, in five leathers and two seat constructions, and shipped direct from our workshop with all import duty paid. There is no importer, wholesaler or showroom in the chain, which is the whole of the reason a hand-built Chesterfield here costs what it does.
What is a Chesterfield sofa?
A Chesterfield is a leather sofa with deep button tufting across the back, rolled arms set at the same height as the back, and a low seat. The equal arm-and-back height is the detail that actually distinguishes it — a buttoned sofa with a higher back is not a Chesterfield. The design dates from the eighteenth century and has been made continuously since.
Are Chesterfield sofas comfortable?
They sit firmer and more upright than a modern deep-seated sofa, which is deliberate — the shape is built for a supported, upright sit rather than for sinking into. Our two seat constructions differ here: individual seat cushions give a softer, more forgiving sit, while the tufted bench is the traditional firmer option. Both are made at the same price, so the choice is comfort preference rather than budget.
How long does a made-to-order Chesterfield take?
Ours take 8–10 weeks from deposit to delivery — four to six weeks of hand-building, then around four weeks for freight, customs clearance and final-mile delivery. Nothing is held in stock, because every sofa is cut and tufted in the leather and seat style you choose. We confirm your window when you order and email at each stage.
What leather are Chesterfield sofas made from?
It varies enormously across the market, and the label rarely helps. We use top-grain buffalo hide, aniline-dyed, on every model — a thicker and more pronounced natural grain than cattle leather. Much furniture sold as "genuine leather" is bonded or corrected-grain: shredded offcuts or heavily processed lower layers with an artificial grain embossed on top, which cracks and peels within a few years. The difference is worth two minutes before you buy from anyone.
Do I have to pay for the sofa in full up front?
No. You pay a 30% deposit when you order and the 70% balance is charged automatically to the same card once your sofa is finished and ready to dispatch, with at least three days' notice by email. You can also cancel free of charge at any time before production starts, deposit included — we email you the day it begins.
